Detailed Solution

An electrolytic reduction is a form of electrolysis in which an electric current is passed through an ionic substance in a molten or dissolved state, causing the electrodes to chemically react and the materials to decompose.

Using this process, metal hydroxides, oxides, and chlorides are electrically reduced in a combined state. At the cathode, metals collect.

The form of extraction procedure to apply for extracting metals from their ores is affected by the nature of the metal in the reactivity series.

Metals that are lower in the reactivity series than carbon can be recovered from their oxides by heating them with carbon. Zinc, iron, lead, tin, and copper are examples of such metals.

For metals in the reactivity series that are above carbon, Sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and aluminum electrolytic reduction of their respective molten chlorides, oxides, or hydroxides is used to extract these metals.

Thus, the correct option is D.
