Detailed Solution

Solution:

Concept: Elements can be normally divided into metals, non-metals and metalloids.

Metals usually show some or all of the following properties:  They have luster (shine), They have a silvery-grey or golden-yellow color, They conduct heat and electricity, etc.

Non-metals usually show some or all of the following properties:  They display a variety of colors, They are poor conductors of heat and electricity, etc.

The elements which exhibit the properties of metals and that of non-metals are known as metalloids. Boron, germanium etc. are some examples.

Hence elements are divided into three types.
