Embryological support for evolution was proposed by Ernst Haeckel based the observation of certain features During embryonic stage, common to all vertebrates, that are absent in adult (NCERT Textbook Statement). Ernst Haeckel, a German biologist, proposed biogenetic law, which states that “ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny.” According to Haeckel, the development of an organism from embryo to adult represents a condensed and modified recapitulation of its evolutionary history.
Haeckel also developed and popularized the use of phylogenetic trees to illustrate the evolutionary relationships between different species.
(1) Karl Ernst von Baer, a German biologist, proposed that the early stages of different animal embryos share common features, suggesting a common ancestry. He observed that embryos of different species show similarities in their early stages and gradually diverge as development progresses.
(2) Charles Darwin is well known for his Theory of Natural Selection.
(3) Alfred Wallace also independently proposed the idea of evolution by natural selection.
