Enforcement of safety laws in factories is necessary because it ensures the safety of workers and others in the vicinity of the factory. A law not backed by action is futile. It became apparent after the Bhopal gas Tragedy of 1984. While there were many laws regarding the safety of workers in place, such as the Factories Act of 1948 and the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, etc., safety standards were flouted by the management of the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal. Despite many objections, the government ignored the red flags as it needed the factory to provide employment and reduce joblessness. It eventually resulted in the leak of highly poisonous gas from the factory, affecting the workers and everyone in the vicinity. The tragedy has resulted in more stringent laws being implemented to ensure workers’ occupational, environmental, and public safety. It must be backed by effective action.
