England and Germany began forming workers’ associations.
They wanted the opportunity to vote and a reduction in working hours. These associations also established funds to assist struggling employees. Ferdinand Lassalle established the General German Workers' Association on May 23, 1863, in Leipzig, Kingdom of Saxony. It was the continent's first formalised mass working-class party. Before joining forces with the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Germany (SDAP) to become the Socialist Workers' Party of Germany in 1875, the group operated under this name. Soon after, this combined organisation adopted the name Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), which is still in use today and has its roots in the creation of the ADAV. It would eventually become SP in Austria.
