Detailed Solution

Erasmus was a Catholic reformer and scholar of Latin and a print media critic.
Because he was concerned that the spread of books containing rebellious ideas might contribute to this, he opposed publishing books. He believed that most literature was worthless, irrational, and simply propagated scandalous, nonreligious views. He thought that the arrival of such publications in great quantities would diminish the value of serious literature. If that happened, the influence of "valuable" books would be destroyed. This dread was the driving force behind the harsh criticism of the newly published works of literature that began to spread and the condemnation expressed by monarchs, religious leaders, and many authors and artists. Throughout his life, Erasmus remained a Catholic and stayed committed to changing how the Church and its priests mistreated people.
