Ethanol on oxidation with alkaline KMnO4 gives ethanoic acid (CH3COOH) .
The pink colour of an ethanol solution disappears when heated with potassium permanganate because of the powerful oxidising agent,  KMnO4, which converts the ethanol to ethanoic acid.
