Detailed Solution

Ethanol reacts with sodium and form Sodium ethoxide and hydrogen.
The common name of ethanol is ethyl alcohol and the formula is C2H5OH or CH3CH2OH. It is obtained by fermentation of molasses which are obtained from the juice of sugarcane. Ethanol reacts with sodium metal to evolve hydrogen gas.

    2Na   +  2CH3-CH2-OH    →   2CH3-CH2-ONa+   +  H2
(Sodium)      (Ethanol)                   (Sodium ethoxide)

To test the presence of hydrogen gas, bring a burning matchstick near to the gas, it will burn with a pop sound.
