Ethene reacts with hydrogen when heated in the presence of nickel catalyst to form ethane:

CH2=CH2+ H2  Ni catalyst,  heat→  CH3-CH3 

In this reaction, breakdown of the double bond between both carbon atoms takes place and the addition of one hydrogen atom to both the carbon atoms takes place.
