More than 4,000 Serbs and members of other minority groups were forced to flee their homes as a direct result of the unrest, which also claimed the lives of around 30 people. Kosovo's declaration of independence from Serbia took place in February of 2008. (Yugoslavia had ceased to exist in 2003, giving way to the federation of Serbia and Montenegro, which itself dissolved in 2006). In the province of Kosovo, there was an increase in the racial hostility that existed between the Serbs and the Albanians. The democratic system was not successful in maintaining the unity of the county. The disintegration of the nation as a whole can be a feature of the stark regional, religious, and socioeconomic divisions that exist inside it. As a direct result of this, Yugoslavia fell apart.
