European employers used many methods in Africa to recruit and retain labour.
To construct plantations and mines, Europeans migrated to Africa. However, there was an issue: there wasn't enough labour available that would work for wages.
Heavy taxes were put in place to attract and keep workers, and the only way to pay them was to labour on mines and plantations for wages. Due to changes in inheritance laws, which only permitted one member of a family to inherit the land and forced the other members into the labour force, peasants were forced off their land and into the cities. Additionally, mineworkers were kept inside of compounds and restricted from moving about at will.
