Europeans found a shortage of labour in Africa.
Africa was abundant in large resources of land and minerals, which made Europeans interested in the land. However, after reaching there, it became difficult for them to set their control over the Africans, as they had plenty of resources and did not want to work for wages. It became difficult for Europeans to recruit African labor because of their disinterest in working for wages and because they had plenty of land of livestock through which they could look after themselves. But after the spread of Rinderpest, the Africans lost 90% of their cattle and were left with no choice but to work as labourers, strengthening colonial power over Africans.
