 Eutrophication is the process which occurs when the environment becomes enriched with nutrients, increasing the amount of plant and algae growth to estuaries and coastal waters.

The main component of fertilizers are nitrogen and phosphorous. When these fertilizers are used excessively the nitrates and phosphates wipes out from the fields into the water bodies leading to eutrophication.
