Detailed Solution

Even if the poverty ratio declined between 1993-34 and 2004-05, due to increasing population, the number of poor remained at about 407 million. It is because of a significant increase in the population in the same period. Out of this increased population, more people got employment due to the green revolution, the establishment of more industries, and the growth of the tertiary sector. As a result, the poverty ratio declined. The government runs many programs to reduce poverty and other schemes that provide various employment opportunities and food security to people in need. A rising population has demerits as it rises in the unemployment rate, illiteracy rate and among others if the population below the poverty line increases.
