Every Saudi citizen is required to be a Muslim.
The official religion of Saudi Arabia is Islam. Other religions' adherents are not permitted to practise their faith publicly. Any foreigner who is not a Muslim and wishes to become a Saudi citizen must convert to Islam. Saudi Arabia is an Islamic theocracy. Minority religious groups are not permitted to practise their faith openly. Apostasy, or abandoning Islam in favour of another faith, is punishable by death. Non-Muslim proselytising and the distribution of non-Muslim religious literature such as the Bible, Bhagavad Gita, and Ahmedi Books are prohibited. In late 2014, legislation was passed mandating the death penalty for anyone found in possession of "publications that exhibit a bias against any other religious beliefs other than Islam" (thought to include non-Muslim religious books).
