E.V.Ramaswamy Naicker founded the Self Respect Movement. E.V. Ramaswamy Naicker, well known as Periyar, joined the Congress after learning that lower castes were required to sit aside from upper castes but later left it. The Self Respect movement asserted that untouchables were the true keepers of the native Tamil and Dravidian cultures that had been repressed by Brahmans. The Bhagavad Gita, the Ramayana, and the ancient lawgiver Manu's Codes were attacked by Periyar, a Hindu scripture critic. He claimed that texts were used to prove the superiority of Brahmans over other castes and the domination of men over women.
