Concept- It is said that work done on an object is positive if force and displacement are in the same direction, and negative if they are in the opposite direction. It is zero work if force and displacement are perpendicular to one another.
(i) Positive work example: a. If we remove the top sheet from the table when the dishes are already seated on it, the dishes will continue to roll due to the friction forces of the cover. The tension-induced labour on the dishes would be beneficial.
b. If we kick a football, it will move in the direction that the force is delivered. Work on football will therefore be beneficial.
(ii) Example of negative work:
a. The frictional force will do less work when we push a book merely a short distance.
b. The labour performed by the buoyant force when a coin sinks.
