Detailed Solution

The expansion of urban centres and industry growth increased the prices of agricultural products.
Since the late eighteenth century, Britain's population has grown, increasing the demand for food grains. In addition, the need for agricultural products increased as cities and industries thrived, thus raising food grain prices. The government also imposed restrictions on corn imports in response to pressure from landed interests. 'The Corn Laws' allowed the government to implement this. However, industrialists and city inhabitants, fed up with excessive food prices, led to the repeal of the Corn Laws. Following the abolition of the Corn Laws, food was imported into the UK at a lower cost than when produced domestically.
