It is the structural and functional unit of bone. It is also called osteon.
It consists of Haversian canal that runs parallel to the marrow cavity of bone.
It has contain an artery, a vein and a lymphatic vessel.
Small fluid filled space called “lacunae” provided with minute canaliculi lie in between the lamella.
Canaliculi connect the lacunae with one another.
Each lacuna encloses one osteocyte.
The Haversian canals communicate with one another with the periosteum and also with he marrow cavity by transverse canal is called Volkmann’s canal.
Nutrients and gases diffuse through Haversian canal.
