Detailed Solution

Sedimentation is the process where solid particles settle at the bottom of a liquid. Decantation is the process of carefully pouring off the liquid, leaving the solid behind.

Sedimentation

When a mixture of solid and liquid is left undisturbed, heavy particles settle at the bottom due to gravity. For example, sand in water settles down after some time.

Decantation

After sedimentation, the clear liquid above the solid can be gently poured off without disturbing the settled particles. This is decantation. For example, pouring water from rice before cooking.
