Detailed Solution

An electric bell is a type of bell that operates using an electromagnet. It is commonly used in schools, doorbells, telephones, fire alarms, railway crossings, burglar alarms, and industries.

Construction of an Electric Bell

An electric bell is made up of the following parts:

  • Gong – the metal part that produces sound when struck.
  • Electromagnet – iron rods wound with insulated copper wire.
  • Soft iron strip/armature – connected to a hammer.
  • Contact screw – maintains electrical contact.
  • Hammer/clapper – strikes the gong.

One end of the coil is connected to the battery terminal, completing the circuit.

Working of an Electric Bell

  1. When current flows through the coils, the iron rods become electromagnetic.
  2. The electromagnet attracts the armature towards it.
  3. The attached hammer strikes the gong, producing a sound.
  4. As the armature moves, the contact is broken, stopping the current.
  5. The spring action returns the armature to its original position, reconnecting the circuit.
  6. This process repeats rapidly, causing the bell to ring continuously.
