Coordination isomerism occurs when ligands and counter-ions exchange between two metal ions; ionisation isomerism occurs when ions inside and outside the coordination sphere interchange, giving different ions in solution.

Coordination isomerism

Occurs in compounds having two metal ions with different ligands in the same complex. The ligands can swap places between metal centres.

Example:
[Co(NH₃)₆][Cr(CN)₆] and [Cr(NH₃)₆][Co(CN)₆]
Both have same formula but different coordination of ligands around metals.

Ionisation isomerism

Appears when the compound gives different ions in solution due to interchange between inner-sphere and outer-sphere ions.

Example:
[Co(NH₃)₅Br]SO₄ and [Co(NH₃)₅SO₄]Br
First gives SO₄²⁻ ions; second gives Br⁻ ions in solution.
