Detailed Solution

Preparation of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)

For the preparation of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), the monomer used is vinyl chloride (CH2=CHCl). PVC is produced through addition polymerisation, where vinyl chloride monomers join together in a chain. When vinyl chloride is treated with peracid under pressure, it forms polyvinyl chloride.

Polymerisation of vinyl chloride

n[CH2=CHCl] → Pressure, Peracid → [–CH2–CHCl–]n

Additional Information

PVC exists in two forms: rigid PVC and flexible PVC.

  • Rigid PVC: Mainly used for sewer and water pipes, doors, windows, and containers. It is durable and corrosion-resistant, often lasting longer than some metals.
  • Flexible PVC: Produced by adding plasticizers. Common uses include insulating electric wires, flooring, phonograph records, and in many applications as a substitute for rubber.

Answer: Hence, option (D) is the correct answer.
