Explain the principle of scalar chain?

The principle of scalar chain states that there should be a clear line of authority from the top level of management to the lowest level in an organization.

Proposed by Henri Fayol, the scalar chain ensures smooth communication and discipline in management. It represents the hierarchy of authority — every employee knows whom to report to and who reports to them.

Example

If A is the manager, B is the assistant manager, and C is a supervisor, communication should flow in the order A → B → C. This maintains order and avoids confusion.

Exception (Gang Plank)

Fayol allowed a shortcut called the Gang Plank for urgent communication between two employees at the same level, with permission from superiors.
