Detailed Solution

Amoeba digests food inside food vacuoles after engulfing it with pseudopodia. Amoeba is a unicellular organism that feeds by phagocytosis. It senses food particles like bacteria, extends finger-like projections called pseudopodia, and surrounds the particle to form a food vacuole

Digestive enzymes are released into this vacuole, breaking complex food into simple nutrients. These nutrients diffuse into the cytoplasm. Undigested remains are expelled through the cell membrane at any point.

Stages

  1. Ingestion: Pseudopodia fuse around food to form a food vacuole.
  2. Digestion: Enzymes in the vacuole hydrolyze macromolecules.
  3. Absorption: Simple sugars, amino acids, and fatty acids move into cytoplasm.
  4. Assimilation: Nutrients used for energy, growth, and repair.
  5. Egestion: Waste expelled by exocytosis.
