Detailed Solution

Xylem and phloem are the two main vascular tissues in plants, acting as a sophisticated plumbing system to transport substances throughout the plant body.

Role of Xylem:

  • Primary Function: The xylem is responsible for the transport of water and dissolved minerals from the roots up to the rest of the plant (stem and leaves).
  • Direction of Flow: The flow in xylem is unidirectional, meaning it only moves in one direction (upwards, from roots to leaves).
  • Mechanism: This upward movement is a passive process, driven by the transpiration pull (explained by the cohesion-tension theory). The cells of the xylem (tracheids and vessels) are dead, hollow tubes, which form a continuous pipeline for water.
  • Other Role: The strong, lignified walls of the xylem also provide structural support to the plant.

Role of Phloem:

  • Primary Function: The phloem transports the "food" of the plant, which is the sugars (primarily sucrose) produced during photosynthesis.
  • Process Name: This transport of sugars is called translocation.
  • Direction of Flow: The flow in phloem is bidirectional (it can move up or down). It moves sugars from a "source" (an area of high sugar production, like a mature leaf) to a "sink" (an area of sugar use or storage, like roots, fruits, or growing buds).
  • Mechanism: Phloem is made of living cells (sieve tubes and their companion cells). This process is an active process, requiring energy (ATP) to load and unload sugars.
