Detailed Solution

Tin is produced in a reverberatory furnace by reducing the ore cassiterite with coal; limestone is then added to generate a slag containing the impurities, which can be removed.

SnO2+2CSn+2CO

So-obtained crude tin is polluted with metals including lead, copper, and iron. To remelt it, an inclined furnace is used.

Tin that is more easily flammable melts away, leaving behind impurities that are less flammable. Finally, green wood poles in touch with the air are used to stir the molten tin. Any leftover metal impurities undergo this process and are oxidised, creating scum that rises to the top.

Hence extraction of metal from the ore cassiterite involves carbon reduction of oxide ore and removal of iron impurity.
