The given expression is  ${\mathrm{z}}^2-4\mathrm{z}-12$ . 

It can be factorised using the identity, ${\mathrm{x}}^2+(\mathrm{a}+\mathrm{b})\mathrm{x}+\mathrm{ab}$. 

Here, $\mathrm{a}+\mathrm{b}=-4$ and $\mathrm{a}\times \mathrm{b}=-12$. 

Therefore, we can say that $\mathrm{a}=-6$ and $\mathrm{b}=2$.

So, ${\mathrm{z}}^2-4\mathrm{z}-12$ can be written as:

${\mathrm{z}}^2-4\mathrm{z}-12={\mathrm{z}}^2-6\mathrm{z}+2\mathrm{z}-12$

                        $=\mathrm{z}(\mathrm{z}-6)+2(\mathrm{z}-6)$   

                         [by taking $(\mathrm{z}-6)$ common ]    

                        $=(z-6)(z+2)$

Hence, factors of $z^2-4z-12$ are $(z-6)$ and $(z+2)$.
