The given expression is  z2-4z-12 . 

It can be factorised using the identity, x2+(a+b)x+ab

Here, a+b=-4 and a×b=-12

Therefore, we can say that a=-6 and b=2.

So, z2-4z-12 can be written as:

z2-4z-12=z2-6z+2z-12

                        =z(z-6)+2(z-6)   

                         [by taking (z-6) common ]    

                        =(z-6)(z+2)
