Famous Tamil epic, Silappadikaram was composed by Ilango.
It was composed around 1800 years ago. It tells the tale of a merchant named Kovalan who resided in Puhar and abandoned his wife Kannagi after he fell in love with a courtesan named Madhavi. Later, he and Kannagi travelled from Puhar to Madurai, where he was falsely accused of stealing by the Pandya king's court jeweller. The king gave Kovalan the death penalty. In her anguish and rage over this injustice, Kannagi—who still loved him—completely wrecked the entire city of Madurai.
