‘Feminist movements’ are aimed at equality. The social set-up propounds for the sexual division of labour. In this context, women are believed to do household work such as cooking, washing, and cleaning. At the same time, the work outside the home is taken up by men. The ideology of such a type of division is deeply rooted in society. Society is patriarchal, meaning men are given more power over women. In the political sphere, too, men were preferred, and women were given no rights. So women worldwide organized themselves and led movements for equal status to men in the public and private spheres. These movements were known as feminist movements.
