Fifty-nine per cent of the population of Belgium live in the Flemish region and speak Dutch. Forty per cent of the Belgian population live in the Wallonia region and speak French, and the remaining one per cent talk in German. The French-speaking minority was relatively rich and powerful compared to the Dutch-speaking majority. This led to friction between the two communities during the 1950s and 60s. The capital, Brussels, presented a problem as the Dutch-speaking community was only a minority there, with 20 per cent of people and the rest speaking French. Thus, tensions were more intense in Brussels.
