Detailed Solution

Sinhalese and Tamils are two major ethnic groups in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka has a diverse population with two major groups: the Sinhala-speaking community (74%) and the Tamil-speaking community (18%).
The Tamil community has two subgroups: "Sri Lankan Tamils" and "Indian Tamils. Sri Lankan Tamils are concentrated in the north and east of the country and belong to either Hinduism or Islam. At the same time, the Sinhala community follows Buddhism and is concentrated in the country's central and southern regions. After its independence in 1948, the Sinhala community managed to get into power due to its majority. In 1956, by passing an Act, the Sinhala language was recognised as the only official language of the nation.
