Detailed Solution

Indian coffee, the Arabica variety, was initially brought from Yemen. Coffee is a plantation as well as a beverage crop. It is used as a mixture in milk and in other ways. It contains ‘Caffeine’, a stimulant which is the main cause of its price as it is costlier than tea. Coffee was first brought to India in the 19th century, and Baba Boodan, a Sufi saint of that time, gave it the idea of its cultivation. In 1830, the cultivation of coffee began in the Chikmagalur district of Karnataka, and nearly 2 lakh hectares of coffee were produced. Every year India gains an income of 316 crore rupees on the sale of coffee to other countries.
