Detailed Solution

Orchids are an example of flowering plants. Our country, India, is one of the 12 mega biodiversity countries in the world. With only 2.4 percent of the world's surface area, India is a megadiverse country, accounting for 7-8 percent of all documented species, including plant and animal species. It also has a long and illustrious cultural history dating back thousands of years. The country's socio-cultural activities are intricately tied to much of India's biodiversity. There are 15,000 flowering plants around the globe, accounting for 6% of the total. Approximately 1,500 plant species are on the verge of extinction. The orchid is one such flowering plant. The orchid family is a large and diverse group of flowering plants with brightly coloured and scented blossoms. They are members of the two largest flowering plant families in the tropics and subtropics. Most orchids are permanent epiphytes that grow affixed to trees or bushes.
