STD refers to Subscriber trunk dialling.
Subscriber trunk dialling (STD), sometimes known as subscriber toll dialling, is a telephone numbering plan feature and telecommunications technology that allows telephone subscribers to dial trunk calls without the need for switchboard operators' help. To facilitate smooth communication flow, the government set up STDs to provide 24/7 facilities to every village in India.
It was so named because subscribers used to make long-distance calls without the help of an operator. However, we no longer hear this because calling has become much easier with the launch of new advanced networks.
