The Border and Road Organisation constructed the Atal Tunnel, the longest highway tunnel in the world (9.02 kilometres). The Atal tunnel connects Manali to the Lahul-Spiti valley all year round. Due to excessive snowfall, the valley used to be closed off for nearly 6 months every year. The Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas, at an elevation of 3000 metres above mean sea level, is where the tunnel was built using the most up-to-date requirements.
