Indira Point was the southernmost point of India. It was the southernmost point of the Indian Union that got submerged under the sea during the 2004 Tsunami that occurred in the Indian Ocean. The Indian Union includes the Indian mainland, all union territories, and two islands, including Lakswadeep and the Andaman and Nicobar islands. Indira Point is located in the Nicobar district of Great Nicobar Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands at 47 metres above sea level. Earlier, Indira Point was known as Pygmalion Point. In the mid-1980s, it was renamed in honour of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. On October 10, 1985, it was officially renamed Indira Point.
