The answer is: 5300.
Let the total number of votes be x
To find 53% of the votes= 53% of x
Now, 31% votes were given to the opponent.
Also, number of votes to an opponent = 31000.
Hence, 31% of x = 31000. This can be written as

x 100 × y

Therefore,

31100 × x = 31000

⇒ 31 x = 31000 × 100 ⇒ 31 x = 3100000 ⇒ x = 310000031 ⇒ x = 100, 000

Hence the total number of votes is 100,000.
