In Chennai, the first cement plant was established in 1904. There was the first systematic attempt to produce cement in Madras. In 1904 South India Industries Limited began producing Portland cement. Finally, India Cement Company Ltd approved cement manufacturing operations in Porbandar, Gujarat, in 1914. Cement businesses require bulky and heavy raw materials such as limestone, silica, and gypsum. The establishment of the industry near locations that produce raw materials is required for that purpose. In total, 128 large plants and 332 mini cement plants were established in the country.
