The canal delivered water from a far-off location where a significant river was being dammed. The new crops needed more water than the canal could provide. Pumps are used by the farmers to extract water from very deep underground. Loans from the bank must be obtained to cover all of these costs. Any profit that was produced was used to pay back the debt.
