Filtration can be used to separate

The most common method of separating a liquid mixed with an insoluble solid is filtration—for example, the mixture of sand and water. Filtration is used here to remove solid particles from the liquid. Various filtering agents are normally used, like filtering paper or other materials. It is the process in which solid particles in a liquid or gaseous fluid are removed using a filter medium that permits the fluid to pass through but retains the solid particles. 

Hence filtration can be used to separate liquids from solids.
