Q.

Find the bond enthalpy of S-S bond from the following data (in kJ):

C2H5SC2H5(g)                                     ΔfH0=147kJmol1

C2H5SSC2H5(g)                        ΔfH0=201kJmol1

S(s)S(g)                                                                              ΔfH0=222kJmol1

Detailed Solution

i) 4C(s)+5H2(g)+S(s)C2H5SC2H5(g)                           ΔrH0=147kJmol1
ii)  4C(s)+5H2(g)+2S(s)C2H5SSC2H5(g)              ΔrH0=201kJmol1
Subtracting Eq(i)from Eq.(ii), we get
C2H5SSC2H5(g)+S(s)C2H5SSC2H5(g)
Adding to this, the following equation
 S(g)S(s)
We get
 C2H5SC2H5(g)+S(g)C2H5SSC2H5(g)
In the last equation 276kJ of heat evolved because of the S-S bond formation.
Hence the bond enthalpy of S-S is  276kJ  mol
