We know if a point divides the line segment AB joining two points Ax1,y1 and Bx2,y2 in a given ratio m:n internally, then by section formula, the coordinates of a point are given as

=mx2+nx1 m+n,my2+ny1 m+n

Since the points (1,-2) and (4,7) divide internally in the ratio 1: 2 then the coordinates of the point can be determined as follows:

(x,y)=1×4+2×11+2,1×7+2×-21+2 

(x,y)=4+23,7-43

(x,y)=63,33=(2,1)

Thus, the coordinate of the required point = (2, 1)
