Each living cell in a plant is located quite close to the surface of the plant .along with lenticels some other structures like epidermis and stomata are also involved in gaseous exchange in plants . The exterior cells of plants are not  always dead cells , there will be presence of living cells also ( epidermal calls , cortex cells ) and  some of the epidermal cells which are modified to stomata and lenticels formed during secondary growth are responsible for gaseous exchange.
