In electromagnetic separation, two rollers are used in the movement of a leather or brass belt, one of which has magnets inside it. At one end of the moving belt, the powdered ore is dropped across it. The non-magnetic portion of the ore is not drawn to the magnet and falls to the ground to create a distinct heap some distance away. The second heap of ore builds close to the magnet as the magnetic portion of the ore sticks to the belt for a longer distance.
