As workers did not only come from Ratnagiri but many villages in India, it is not true that most of the workers in Bombay came from Ratnagiri. Labourers in the industry during the early 20th century came from villages because, at that time in India, many revolutionary changes in the industrial sector were going on. Simultaneously, at that time, the Britishers exploited the peasants and farmers with their overloaded tax policy. So peasants and artisans came to the city area searching for jobs in the mill. Thus they moved to cities like Mumbai and Kanpur, where the cotton mills were established.
