As it lies on the x – axis, the y-coordinate is 0.

Distance between two points = x 2 − x 1 2 + y 2 − y 1 2  .
Since R is at equal distance from P and Q, we get,Question Image 8−4x=20+8x 8−20=8x+4x   −12=12x 12x=−12 x= −12 12 x=−1  
The required point on x-axis which is equidistant from given points P (2, -2) and Q (-4, 2) is (-1,0).
