Given, the debt of Rs. 3600is to be paid in 40 annual installments.
The sum of 40 years is termed as,  S40=3600........(i)
After 30 installments one-third of the debt is unpaid,
S30=3600-13 of 3600 S30=3600-13×3600 S30=3600-1200 S30=2400........(ii) The sum of terms be Sn=n22a+n-1d
Substitute the values,
S40=4022a+39d 4022a+39d=3600  2a+39d=180.....(iii) From the 2nd equation, S30=2400 302[2a+29d]=2400 2a+29d=160......(iv) Solve equation iii and iv,
(2a+39d)-(2a+29d)=180-160 10d=20 d=2 Substitute the value in equation iii to get the first term value,
2a=180-39d 2a=180-(39×2) 2a=180-78 2a=102 a=1022 a=51 Hence, the value of the first installment is Rs. 51.  Therefore, option 2 is correct.
