First Indian jute mill in Calcutta was set up in 1917 by Sir Seth Hukumchand. The jute industry of India has first place in the world. 'Gold Filament' is another name for jute. In Rishra, near Kolkata in 1859, the first factory of the jute industry was planted. West Bengal is the first place in India where the jute industry was set up. Out of 114 jute factories in the country, 102 alone are situated in West Bengal. These factories have been established in the 97 km distance in width of 3 to 4 km on both sides of the Hooghly River. Some major centres of the jute industry are Risra, Titagarh, Bali, Agapara, Howrah and many more.
