First printed edition of Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas came in 1810.
Print encouraged Hindus to read religious texts, particularly in vernacular languages. Tulsidas' Ramcharitmanas, a sixteenth-century text, received its first printed edition in Calcutta in 1810. Cheap lithographic editions flooded north Indian markets by the mid-nineteenth century. Beginning in the 1880s, the Naval Kishore Press in Lucknow and the Shri Venkateshwar Press in Chennai Numerous religious texts in vernaculars were published in Bombay by the press. These could be easily read by the public in printed and portable form. faithful at all times and in all places. They could also be read aloud to a large audience.
